Asian American Mental Health Coalition November Meeting

Friday, Nov 7, 2025 , 2:00 pm 4:15 pm

This intermediate workshop presents Narrative Therapy (NT) through the lineage of Michael White and Stephen Gaddis, expanded towards culturally-embedded values. The session will include elaborations on NT’s theoretical worldview (i.e., post-structural theory, power analysis through language). During the workshop, we will cover two techniques in NT: externalizing conversations and reauthoring conversations. Participants will engage with NT’s therapeutic practices. Furthermore, connections will be made to contextual, cultural, and ethical elements of NT practices, as we aim to move our field to treat our patients humanely as unique persons.

Format: Virtual Workshop (You will receive a Zoom registration link after you sign up)

Topic: Narrative therapy: Deconstructing social discourses and empowering cultural values

Learning Objectives:

  • Compare the way different worldviews (normative, narrative, etc) approach the multiplicities of cultures, heritages, and ways of story-ing human experiences
  • Describe the narrative worldview, particularly inviting practitioners towards a decentered and influential approach stance that prioritizes the other.
  • Apply externalizing and re-authoring practices that promote rich story development in the context of each patient’s cultures.
