BCNC Launches AI-Powered English Program with Support from First Literacy
November 5, 2025
We are excited pilot an innovative AI-Powered English program for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) learners, thanks to funding from a grant from First Literacy.
Beginning in January 2026, BCNC will offer a 12-week mini course designed for motivated Adult Education students who want to build confidence and independence in their English learning journey. This pilot program takes a fresh approach: instead of adding more lessons, students will learn how to use ChatGPT as a practical study tool to strengthen their language skills.

Each week, students will explore one simple, focused technique to practice English using AI tools. Topics will include:
- Building vocabulary
- Checking pronunciation
- Correcting grammar
- Engaging in role-play conversations
- Reviewing and expanding classroom lessons
All activities are directly connected to the content of BCNC English for College and Career Readiness classes, ensuring that practice remains relevant and aligned with what they are already learning in class.
Many students are eager to improve their English faster but are not sure how to practice effectively on their own. Others are curious about AI but feel unsure or even intimidated by it. This course aims to bridge the digital divide by helping students use AI responsibly and confidently. It does not replace teachers but instead, it empowers learners to study independently when teachers are not there, making learning more flexible and continuous. At BCNC, we believe AI should be a “study buddy,” not a substitute. This program teaches students how to use AI tools ethically not as shortcuts or cheating aids, but as a way to enhance speaking, writing, and review skills through guided and thoughtful practice.
