English Classes for College & Career Readiness

Our classes for Sept. 2024 are now full. We are still accepting applications for limited numbers of seats that will be open in January or April 2025. Please understand that some of our classes have waitlists that may be long. Click here to register online, or see instructions below about registering at a BCNC office.

Our 5 levels of free English classes will teach you the language and skills needed for your everyday life, your job/career, and college. We have morning and evening classes.

These classes are funded by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

CLASS SCHEDULE

Morning classes: 10:00am-12:30pm

Evening classes: 6:00-8:30pm

All classes 3 days/week (Tues-Thurs) + 2.5 hours of homework outside of class time each week

7.5 hours/week of class + 2.5 hours/week of homework = 10 hours/week. Tuesday and Thursday sessions will be onsite (in BCNC classrooms); Wednesday sessions will be online (on Zoom).

What You Will Learn

  • Levels 0-3: basic English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills to help you succeed in everyday life, at work, or in school

  • Level 4: English, communication, and other skills that you need to get a better job, enter a job training program, and/or get ready for college

Time: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; 10:00 A.M. – 12:30 P.M or 6:00 P.M. – 8:30 P.M. ( + 2.5 hours/week homework all classes)

Length: September 2024 – June 2025

Cost: Free!

Includes:

  • Educational and career advising

  • One-on-one tutoring (optional; dependent on volunteer availability)

Requirements:

  • Must attend all 3 days of class

  • Complete a registration form

  • Complete placement tests and interviews: English reading and writing, English speaking

Level 0 (Quincy classes only)

Level 0 is a very-beginner ESOL English class. You will learn:

  • Simple English pronunciation, speaking, listening, reading and writing

  • Basic computer skills and other skills for studying and communicating in English in school, at work and in your community

  • Knowledge of American culture

For example, you will learn how to:

  • Introduce yourself

  • Ask questions

  • Listen for information

  • Write messages to people in English

  • Learn English over the Internet

In class, you will:

  • Talk with your teacher and other students

  • Work in groups

  • Use computers sometimes to study and communicate

  • Practice good study habits

This class will help you take your first steps in English and communicate more easily with people in your community.

 

Level 1

Level 1 is a beginner ESOL English class. You will learn:

  • Basic English speaking, listening, writing, and reading

  • Basic computer skills for jobs and college

  • Other skills for jobs and college

For example, you will learn how to:

  • Use polite English

  • Ask for help

  • Listen for information

  • Write polite emails

  • Use the Internet

In class, you will:

  • Work in groups

  • Learn how to listen and understand English well

  • Study well

  • Talk with your teacher and other students

  • Practice using the computer

This class will help you practice your English a lot and become more confident about speaking to other people in English.

Level 2

Level 2 is a high beginner to low intermediate English class that will help you improve your English skills for jobs, job trainings, and college. You will learn speaking, listening, writing, and reading for better communication for your job and at school. You will also learn more vocabulary for everyday English.

In class, you will:

  • Improve your study skills so that you feel more comfortable in the American classroom

  • Practice speaking and giving presentations in front of the class to prepare for academic group presentations

  • Practice writing emails and short essays

  • Go on field trips

  • Use the computer to continue learning when you are not in the classroom

This class will help you learn more about college and work life in the United States. You will improve your knowledge and skills through classroom instruction, online learning, and field trips.

 

Level 3

Level 3 is an intermediate English class. You will develop and refine your skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing through a variety of engaging and practical experiences. You will especially focus on improving your reading and vocabulary.

  • Read news to improve your reading for college

  • Practice completing projects and speaking in front of the class

  • Prepare for and go to community events

  • Work by yourself, in pairs, and in groups

  • Use the computer to complete your classwork and do research

This class will help you continue developing your college and job skills to help you achieve your personal, academic, and career goals.

 

Level 4

Level 4 is an advanced English class. You will learn the English, professional, and technical skills that you will need to apply for college and/or take the next step in your career.

In class, you will:

  • Write professional resumes and cover letters

  • Learn techniques for researching using the computer and other reference materials

  • Practice writing essays for college applications

  • Strengthen your job interview and networking skills

  • Discuss current events and other real-world issues

  • Study and prepare for college entrance exams

After this class, you will be ready to take the next step towards your academic and career goals: finding a meaningful job, entering a job training program, or starting college.
