Chinatown Presents: Personal Storytelling for Social Change at Dudley Cafe

D.iRvin.Photography-108.jpg

Humans are storytelling creatures. As far as we know, we are the only species on the planet to tell and transfer information through story. We make meaning of and understand the world through stories. But sadly, some stories improve the worlds we live in and others destroy them.

As work for justice intensifies amid rising global populism, learning to wield our personal stories to support the change we want to see in our communities at all scales (local, regional, national, global) grows more important by the minute.

Pao Arts Center, PRX Podcast Garage and Dudley Café join together to present two nights of storytelling across neighborhoods by everyday community members.

Twelve participants will participate in a four-week workshop to learn about storytelling skills and share their personal stories!

These stories will be shared at Pao Arts Center on October 25th and Dudley Café on November 23rd. We hope you can join us at both locations to support our community storytellers!

Registration is free! Suggested donation: $10

About PRX: PRX is a leading media company, shaping the future of audio by connecting talented producers with their most engaged, supportive audiences. PRX builds technology and creates cutting-edge content that reaches millions of listeners worldwide.

API Arts Network Presents: 140 LBS: How Beauty Killed My Mother

Friday, November 22, 7:30 - 9:00 pm

Two hours into surgery, Susan's mother loses oxygen to her brain and the plastic surgeon deliberately does not call 9-1-1 for fourteen minutes. Five days later, while in a coma, she flatlines. The surgeon is charged with medical negligence and her family falls apart; no one talks about what happened. Nineteen years later on her wedding day, Susan's mother's seat sits empty and Susan realizes she can no longer ignore what she's always wanted: to know who her mother was. Sifting through thousands of deposition pages and reaching out to the killer's family, Susan uncovers the painful truth of her mother, herself, and the impossible ideal of Vietnamese feminine beauty.

Directed by Sara Porkalob, 140 LBS has been featured on NPR, The San Francisco Chronicle, ABC7 News, CAAMFest 37, and The Moth Mainstage. The San Francisco Chronicle calls it "fascinating, touching, upsetting, poignant, startling, affecting, engrossing, emotional, informative and, more than anything, humane." 140 LBS had a sold-out world premiere February 2019 in Seattle, sold-out premiere in San Francisco in May 2019, and is making its premiere in Boston in partnership with ArtsEmerson, the API Arts Network, and the Pao Arts Center.

With a vision for individual and community healing—made possible through the interplay of comedy and drama—her work delves deeply into the lived realities of body insecurity, grieving, and trauma. Her first work, 140 LBS: HOW BEAUTY KILLED MY MOTHER, is a solo theatrical show about the true story of how Lieu lost her mother to plastic surgery malpractice when she was 11 years old and her search to find the man responsible for her mother's death. Lieu plays 11 characters in 75 minutes, weaving the story through the lens of the Vietnamese refugee experience. She has been featured at CAAMFest37, The Moth Mainstage, and RISK! Residence Lab Kick-Off

reslab_2019cohort_outdoor_pic.jpg

6 Chinatown residents + 4 artists + 1 abandoned lot = Residence Lab!

Four Boston-based Asian American artists from various backgrounds including film, illustration, photography, sound art, poetry, and architecture spent the summer collaborating with and learning from Chinatown residents. The artist-resident collective aimed to address one core question through their work: How might residents take ownership of Chinatown’s physical space in a way that preserves and fosters neighborhood identity?

Come discover the creative results of bringing artists and residents together to shape a rapidly changing Chinatown and reimagine an empty lot next to the Chinatown Gate.

Residence Lab’s space activation opens on Friday, August 23, 2019, during ACDC’s Films at the Gate and closes on Saturday, September 28, 2019, during BCNC’s Experience Chinatown Festival.

This program is created in partnership with the Asian Community Development Corporation. Residence Lab is generously funded by the Barr Foundation and ArtPlace America and supported by Sasaki’s Fabrication Studio. Click here to learn more about residencies at the Pao Arts Center.

IMG_6643.jpg

Silent Flight is a site-responsive and improvisational dance piece directed by Wendy Jehlen, Artistic Director of ANIKAYA Dance Theater, in collaboration with an international ensemble of professional dancers from Asia, Africa, South America and the United States.

Through community workshops, the dancers collaborate with seniors from the Chinatown community who practice folk dance weekly at the Pao Arts Center. The performance incorporates elements based on the flocking behavior of birds, exploring similarities between the movements found in human cultures, with relatable content about migration and immigration. The dance piece uses creativity and culture to improve community health and well-being.

The performance will take place at the Rose Kennedy Greenway - Chinatown Park, and is funded in part by Boston Cultural Council; Eastern Bank; and the New England States Touring program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program and the six New England state arts agencies.

Chinatown Presents: No-No Boy

Julian sarporiti.jpg

Acclaimed songwriter musician Julian Saporiti brings his No-No Boy project, an innovative blend of music and scholarship, to Pao Arts Center. Working from years of doctoral research at Brown University, Saporiti has transformed Asian American histories into an immersive multimedia concert using original folk songs and archival projections to create what NPR has called "an act of revisionist subversion." This concert will focus on a selection of songs from Saporiti's vast catalogue that highlight his family's history as Vietnamese refugees, as well as a suite of songs that look at diverse stories from North America's Chinatowns.

Suggested donation for the event: $10. All proceeds support arts programming at the Pao Arts Center.

About the Artists:

No-No Boy is a multimedia concert featuring the music of singer/songwriter Julian Saporiti. Inspired by his doctoral research at Brown University, as well as his experiences growing up as the son of a Vietnamese refugee in Tennessee, Saporiti’s original songs, interwoven amongst stories he has collected through the years, are performed against a backdrop of projections displaying archival photographs and films. Silent Flight - Dance Performance

11.6.18 - REGISTRATION IS NOW FULL ! Please email cynthia.woo@bcnc.net to be added to the waiting list.

Don't miss the opportunity to work with Sara Porkalob, award-winning storyteller activist based in Seattle. Storytelling is one of the most rigorous tools we have to fight oppression and social injustice and this three hour workshop provides accessible creative strategies to individuals interested in pairing activism with their specific practice via storytelling. In partner and individual exercises, we will engage in a series of written and performative fast-paced content generative prompts. You’ll learn how to create a dynamic physical world out of nothing and play multiple characters, all the while using YOUR unique strengths and truths to engage your audience towards a shared goal. Stories can change the world. Share yours.

Participants will need: something to write with, something to write on (ideally not an electronic device), a water-bottle, and comfortable clothing.

Funded in part by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Theater Project, with lead funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and additional support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Suggested Pay-What-You-Can Donation: $20 including dinner and workshop
