Supporting Families While They're Staying Home

BCNC youth leaders are working on projects to address racism and needs in their community.

  • Youths are writing a letter to send to Boston, Quincy, and Malden school leadership to share their experiences with racism. They are asking the school leaderships to act and denounce racism.

  • Immigrant youth are producing an educational video about anti-Asian racism that will shared through social media.

  • Youth leaders are organizing a series in May on “Empowering Youth through Arts” which will include a panel, workshop, and performance.

Acorn Early Education teachers have adopted new communication tools with families with toddlers and preschoolers. They set up virtual classrooms with videos and learning activities with families. Families can post responses and interact with the teachers. Weekly, staff are also checking in with families by phone and sending bilingual learning activities and information on resources by email weekly.

Adult Education has continued all their classes to distance learning using technology that fits students’ technology abilities. Advisors have switched from career planning to providing support for immediate needs including resources related to food, rent, and unemployment benefits. They have also set up open office hours so that students can call in with any questions they have.

Red Oak After School staff are creating and distributing a collection of arts enrichment videos for children and their families. In addition, staff distribute weekly updates and resources to families and offer daily homework help office hours to support children with their schoolwork. Family Services is providing individual services to clients in Boston and Quincy to help them apply for unemployment benefits and other financial support. Family Services continues to run the Strengthening Families Program virtually every Friday morning and is hosting biweekly parent support groups and an autism parent support group.
