Parenting Research Project Highlights Community Voices

Since September 2019, BCNC has partnered with Dr. Judith Scott and her research team from Boston University to conduct a parenting research project, “Cultural and Contextual Influences on Parenting Among Low-Income Chinese Immigrant Caregivers Living in the Greater Boston Area.”

Dr. Scott, while working as an evaluation consultant for BCNC, found that

“[BCNC] staff pointed out that the voices of the families they served were missing from research. My collaborators and I felt that investigating the parenting experiences of Chinese immigrant caregivers would help social service organizations better serve this community and ensure that the voices of Chinese immigrant caregivers are included in parenting literature.”

The project aims to gain an understanding of parenting values, beliefs, practices and motivations among low-income Chinese families and social-environmental issues. Participants were multi-generational families from the city of Quincy and Greater Boston areas; the research was conducted in both Mandarin and Cantonese.

Dr. Scott and BCNC Director of Programs Yoyo Yau presented the findings at the Doris Duke Fellowship for the Promotion of Child Well-Being Research to Action Grant virtual presentation on April 22, 2020. More than 50 participants from different states attended the presentation. The next step is to report the findings to the community and identify resources for parents coping with the COVID-19 pandemic.
