BCNC Portraits: Karla, AmeriCorps Volunteer
/Karla is an NAIP AmeriCorps volunteer in BCNC’s Adult Education program. After graduating from Northeastern University with a BA in Political Science, Karla wanted to spend time getting to know issues that immigrants, refugees, and underserved communities face.
She is currently teaching an experimental class on English for Healthcare as well as a citizenship class for immigrant adults. In English for Healthcare, Karla tests a new teaching platform (from the U.S. Department of Education) called Voxy to see what is and isn’t useful for students. In the citizenship class, Karla draws on her political science background to not only teach American history, but also to encourage students to understand the role of media, do their own research, and identify biases.
“I feel passionate about teaching and serving others. [Through this citizenship class,] I want to give people tools to understand things, make their own choices, and feel confident doing so.”
Karla hopes to apply to law school and pursue a career in human or civil rights on an international scale. When she’s not teaching, you may find her walking her cat, Ziggy Stardust, outside.
