/Elaine Chung grew up in Boston Chinatown and the time she participated in BCNC youth programs as a high schooler was instrumental to her personal and professional growth. Today as a professional in branding and graphic design, Elaine brings her expertise to BCNC’s Marketing Committee and as the graphic designer of BCNC’s Annual Reports. Elaine shares how BCNC impacted her journey and why she continues to give back to the community that shaped her.
Which program did you participate in at BCNC, and how did it impact you?
I participated in BCNC’s youth leadership and employment programs. A standout aspect of the programs were the financial literacy workshops, which taught me how to manage my own money. That’s something I did not learn at school, but it’s been an invaluable skill ever since. As a young participant, I was exposed to teamwork in ways I hadn’t experienced before.
The year-round programs gave me access to activities that exposed me to different cultures and perspectives, that expanded my worldview.
What are some standout memories or experiences did you have at BCNC?
One of the most significant supports BCNC provided was giving me my first summer job. It wasn’t just a paycheck—it was an opportunity to develop professional skills, build confidence, and understand the value of hard work. The first paycheck from BCNC marked an important milestone for me, and with it, I was able to open my first bank account. It felt like a major step toward financial independence, and I’ve carried that lesson with me throughout my life.
Some of my most cherished memories are the relationships I built with both the friends I made and the BCNC staff. I’ll never forget learning how to cook Korean and African dishes—it was a fun way to connect with others.
What motivates you to give back to the community?
Being born and raised in the Boston Chinatown community, I feel a deep sense of responsibility to give back. The impact BCNC had on my life is immeasurable, and I’m inspired to support because I see how much BCNC continues to do for generations to come. I’m also motivated by the amazing BCNC staff. Their passion for serving the community is contagious, and I see firsthand the difference they’re making in people’s lives. The growth of the organization and its ability to continually care for the community motivates me to stay involved.
My involvement with BCNC has shown me that community service isn’t just about the staff or the programs; it’s about the community itself. The support, commitment, and involvement of everyone—from participants to volunteers—create an environment where lasting change happens.
Elaine’s journey with BCNC highlights how community-based programs can have a profound impact on young people, not just during their formative years, but well into adulthood. Her story underscores the importance of mentorship, exposure to diverse cultures, and the power of giving back to the community that helps you grow.
