As part of BCNC’s 50th Anniversary, we hosted a reunion for the Youth Center and Recreation programs on Saturday, August 3rd, 2019. Former participants, staff, and volunteers gathered at the Josiah Quincy School gym for a friendly volleyball tournament. Afterward, everyone made their way to the Youth Center lounge for socializing! Between games of foosball and In a Pickle, attendees shared memories over snacks and old photographs. Jeremy Mei, a former youth participant, recalls his favorite memories of BCNC were “coming in after school to hang out, participating in guy’s club, cooking club, digital connector, and playing computer games after 5pm.”
On July 16th, the Bamboo Circle, BCNC’s young professionals’ network, had a Paint Nite fundraiser to support the Youth Center. 31 people learned how to make a beautiful seascape painting, all while relaxing with food, drinks, and conversation. Family Services collaborated with the Museum of Fine Arts to bring the Special Arts Program to BCNC Quincy for the first time. 11 families who have children with special needs participated in this 4-session art class. Through hands-on art activities, children developed their understanding and interest in arts, and improved communication between parents and children. In the last session, families will go on a field trip to the Museum of Fine Arts. Thank you to the MFA for this partnership!
CEO Giles Li was featured in the Patriot Ledger for his advocacy work with immigrant communities and for BCNC's work in Quincy! "Change sits at the heart of the organization Li oversees: BCNC, a nonprofit based in Boston’s Chinatown neighborhood, supports immigrant families across the metropolitan region. When Sonny was in 6th grade, his mother got him involved in BCNC’s Youth Center for the summer. There, Sonny found a supportive community and grew into an outstanding youth leader. During his time at the Youth Center, Sonny participated in community projects and prepared for getting into college. At the end of June, children in the Acorn Early Education & Care program celebrated their graduation with a ceremony attended by family and friends. Congratulations to the children who graduated the program ready for kindergarten! The Acorn program is currently accepting enrollment for Fall 2019 for our new Boston Public Schools Pre-K class as well as the regular Acorn classes.
