BCNC Portrait: Fanny

Meet Fanny, a dedicated participant at BCNC with a remarkable journey. When Fanny first arrived in the U.S., English was entirely unfamiliar to her. Overcoming the daunting language barrier proved so challenging that she initially returned to China. Fanny eventually decided to return to the U.S. and came to BCNC for support. Because of our family centered approach, BCNC is able to support Fanny and her whole family. Fanny shares her inspiring story here.

How did you first learn about BCNC?

I immigrated to the United States in 2013. Because English is my second language I didn’t feel comfortable to live in the U.S. at first. So I went back to China. I decided to return to the U.S. because both my parents live here. Before I immigrated to U.S., my older sister studied English at BCNC.
She recommended I also go to BCNC to learn English.

What programs did you attend at BCNC?

I first came to BCNC just to learn English. After I joined the Adult Education class, I found out that there are many more programs at BCNC that I can join. For example, they have a citizenship class if you want to become a U.S. citizen. After taking the classes at BCNC, it was easy to pass the citizenship test and become a U.S. citizen. I have recently attended parenting workshops, healthy cooking classes, and an anti-racism class.

How has BCNC impacted your family?

When I got married and had a baby, I wanted to let them come to BCNC since I have studied here before. I felt that this was a very good decision.  My child also enjoys being here in the early education and care program. Each teacher at BCNC is very patient. When I see my child growing up and learning every day, I feel very happy. She shares what she learned in school every day when she comes home.  I realized that my child has learned a lot from BCNC. I hope my child can become an outgoing person and have fun with more friends. I hope my child can study hard and become a better person.
